Climate and Human Health

In 2022 the city of Durban in South Africa was hit by some of its worst ever floods.

All communities were affected, but when disaster hits, the vulnerable are affected the most – and in Durban that was the many thousands of residents that live in informal settlements.
Many lost everything in the floods, which also left a legacy of health issues.

Two years on, residents from these communities are working with the University of KwaZulu Natal and ICLEI Africa (Local Governments for Sustainability) to share their knowledge about the impacts of extreme weather events and the possible solutions that could help build the city’s resilience to them.

Made in partnership with Wellcome Trust for online use and screenings at landmark climate events, including COP29 in Baku.
